BuyDomains.com has been one of the leading domain marketplaces since 1999. They are located in Waltham, MA. BuyDomains.com, formerly RareNames LLC, was acquired by NameMedia, Inc. in 2005 for $72.5 million and 750,000 NameMedia shares. BuyDomains.com boasts a portfolio of over 800,000 domain names. Their marketplace has over 1.5 million domain names listed for sale, this puts BuyDomains in the top 10 domain marketplaces. According to DnJournal, the largest sale to take place through the NameMedia network was Fish.com, which sold for $1,020,000 in November2005. Some other high dollar reported sales to take place through the BuyDomains.com/NameMedia network are as follows:
Unlike the other reviewed Domain Aftermarket companies, BuyDomains.com has a static marketplace instead of an auction platform. The inventory of domain names come directly from their own portfolio as well as individuals that list domains through their, AfternicDLS which allows people to simultaneously list their domain names on several sites. The Web sites that are included in the AfternicDLS program are BuyDomains.com, Afternic.com and other partner sites.
BuyDomains.com offers two straight-forward listing options. Users can elect the Buy Now option and purchase domains for the asking price or choose the Offer/Counter Offer format which would allow price negotiations between the buyer and seller. Compared to other sites we reviewed, the majority of domains listed here are priced higher because they are premium domains. However, since BuyDomains.com does not display the price users need to request this information from them. BuyDomains.com will respond with a price but it is usually negotiable.
Unlike other aftermarket sites, BuyDomains.com does not offer appraisal services. It is likely, and appropriate, that they do not offer it because since they are a potential buyer of any domain listed on their site and it would be a conflict of interest for them to appraise sellers' domain names. However, their sister site, Afternic, does offer appraisals.
It is free to browse the inventory on BuyDomains.com. However, there is an annual fee of $20 to join the AfternicDLS program, if sellers want to list domain names on BuyDomains.com. For every sale transaction made under the AfternicDLS program, there is a 20% commission taken from the sale amount. When determining the sale price for a domain name, the seller should add the sale fee to the amount to their list price. Keep in mind that BuyDomains.com also buys domain names and domain name portfolios so check their offer on your domain if you are looking to sell. It is best to do some comparisons with other sites before settling on an offer. Since this is a business, they will be looking to make a profit where possible.
BuyDomains.com accepts credit card, PayPal, and wire transfer. One feature that sets BuyDomains.com apart from other sites is its domain financing option. Their Web site claims, Loans up to $4,999 - no approval needed. They also offer financing of domain names that costs $5,000 or more with approval. If buyers choose to use domain financing, they do not become the owner of the domain name until the loan is paid off.
After a domain is purchased, BuyDomains.com sends an email with instructions on how to transfer the domain name to the seller and most domains are transferred to buyers within three business days from the time of sale.
Finding resources on BuyDomains.com is easy. Their site is laid out very well, for both buyers and sellers. The search field is very prominent on their Homepage, making it easy to find. The basic search allows users to search listed domain names by keyword which rendered relevant results. The advanced search functionality allows users to search by the following criteria:
The Search Results page was easy to read as it listed all domains that fit the search criteria, sorted by their attributes (e.g., domain name, category, and price).Furthermore, the user can filter results by selecting options provided on the advanced search page. There is even a field that allows users to filter by current geographical location which comes in handy when searching for geo domain names. BuyDomains.com' search sorting and filtering is one of the easiest of all aftermarket sites to use.
BuyDomains.com is a top competitor in the domain name industry. They have hosted single domain transactions surpassing the one million dollar mark. That is an accomplishment in itself. BuyDomains.com is a company you can rely on when buying or selling domain names. Although most of BuyDomains.com's inventory is priced higher than others, they are willing to negotiate prices. However, they do have a reputation of making low offers on users' domain names listed for sale. BuyDomains.com is ideal for small businesses looking to purchase a quality domain name and domainers looking to sell domain names or an entire portfolio.
